SPC 142 - Public Speaking
3 Credits
Primarily concerned with the source and substance of ideas, evidence, and reasoning that form the basis for good oral communication. Students will write and present original speeches applying these ideas and the principles of organization, clarity, vitality, and ethics. When speaking, students will learn effective ways to use voice and body language to communicate a message and meet time/deadline expectations.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Use relaxation techniques to manage stage fright or anxiety while speaking.
2. Brainstorm topics for public presentations.
3. Develop writing skills for a variety of public speaking activities.
4. Present various types of speeches within a prescribed time parameter.
5. Use supportive materials to present organized speech.
6. Use vocal variety techniques while speaking.
7. Use body language to support speech content while speaking.
8. Analyze speeches, in terms of language and delivery, to deliver specific feedback for others.
9. Apply ethical principles when presenting in a public forum.
10. Apply rhetorical principles to speech development in support of speech objective.
11. Demonstrate ability to meet deadline expectations.
